Brighouse is a Great Town for Adventure

Brighouse is a short stop off the M62 and easy to get to from most areas in the UK via car or train. It is a town filled with history and stories to discover as well as having bars and restaurants that would rival many cities. We have picked a few of our favourite places to visit in Brighouse so you can plan your trip.

Brighouse Canal Basin

Brighouse was originally a small village that excelled in textile manufacturing, however in the 1700s the Calder and Hebble Navigation was created and Brighouse was reborn as a canal port. The Calder & Hebble Navigation is part river, part canal and was built sometime around the 1760s by the famous engineer John Smeaton. Since its creation a lot of canal traffic has passed through the Canal Basin coming from the Port of Liverpool all the way through the Pennines and further on to Hull. Recently the Canal Basin was treated to a six figure regeneration project and is the ideal place to walk along the towpath and rejoin Calderdale Way.

The Smith Art House

On the edge of Brighouse there is a small park which is the venue for the Smith Art House. A purpose built Victorian Art Gallery, the Smith Art House boasts a mix of exhibitions and has a permanent Victorian exhibition of paintings and artwork as well as giving the opportunity to local and regional artists to display their work in temporary exhibitions. The Victorian building was given a facelift in 2008 and showcased some new items in the permanent exhibits for the first time. It is free to go and visit the Smith Art House and a definite for history lovers or art lovers.

The Annual Brighouse Charity Gala

Every year on the last Saturday of June, Brighouse hold their annual Brighouse Charity Gala. If you get there before 1pm you can get a good place to watch the carnival procession with floats and bands entertaining the crowds as they move through the streets of Brighouse. The carnival goes on for around 4 hours when at 5.00pm, yellow plastic ducks with tickets on them are emptied into the Clifton Beck and race down with the current to the finish line. The public watch as the first duck to cross the finish line is shown and the ticket winner gets a cash prize. This is loads of fun for locals and visitors and has a great atmosphere especially considering all the money raised gets distributed directly to local charities. However this is only once a year and gets very busy so make sure you book your hotel early.

Don’t miss out on the fun of the Gala or the fantastic local art, get booked into one of the hotels in Leeds Brighouse straight away and have a great time in this lovely town.
