The School Districts in the Great State of California Should Sell Schools to CalPERS

One of the largest investment pools in the US is CalPERS, this is the California Teachers Association Pension Fund, whose retirees have benefited immensely due to the pooling of the savings and retirement accounts of all the teachers. When they invest in companies they are able to buy the stock at a special deal much like Warren Buffett. They have done pretty good with their investments over the years, and although they have taken a hit during this current recession they are still doing better than most.

Many of the retired teachers are complaining that their benefits are being cut because of the State of California’s budget, and they are complaining that many of the teachers in the union who are still working are being laid off. Tenured teachers of 9-10 years are now for the first time on the chopping block, and it takes 3-4 years just to get tenured. California Schools are hurting big time.

They note the reality, that if you do not teach the kids today, then you will spend more money on police, courts, rehabs, jails, and prisons in the next 20 years. And rightfully so they note you can either pay now for proper education, or you can pay later, but if you pay later it will be 10 times the amount.

True enough, and to that point an uneducated workforce means that California which was once the seventh largest economy in the world if it stood alone will probably slip to number 20 or 30. Since the California state budget is so underwater, and since CalPERS is so wealthy, I have a suggestion. The School Districts in California Should sell schools to CalPERS and let them run things? Then they can put their money where their mouth is and solve two problems at once, please, consider this.
